“Just minutes after gelding this young colt, one of the cowboys assures him it is not the end of the world.”

Cowboy is Dan Schleigh befriending a colt that turned out to be a true outlaw.  This was one of the few times he wasn’t trying to kill someone.

“Because she was crippled, the fine old bridle horse was returned home to be put down and buried there.  With mixed emotions, we rescued her, hoping to raise just one more colt.  We shared her growing agony through her pregnancy, often second guessing what we had done. But on this day, her sweetest day, she, her little roan colt, and even the world around her told us.  It was what she wanted.”

Scene is the Sycan Marsh on the ZX Ranch, Paisley Oregon.  At the

time of this scene it was the largest ranch in Oregon, running some

10,000 mother cows.

Scene is gathering fat steers to ship at the Cascade Ranch, Lake Creek,

Oregon As calves by their mother’s side, these steers summered on the

mountains behind them, making the same trip as cattle have done in this

valley for many generations.
